Although I have stayed in many amazing places on the planet, it is not every day that I am swept off my feet. This place was just that. Tongabezi Lodge, located in Zambia near Victoria Falls, is one of my favorite properties.
This is straight outta Mark Twain. I fell asleep to the sound of hippos grunting and woke up in a treehouse with monkeys outside the windows. As the sunset approached, elephants crossed our street. We waited in stop traffic. We sat down on our river raft, drank our tea, and watched the crocodiles slowly glide down the river.

The Tongabezi Lodge, located on the Zambezi River at the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, is situated in the middle of the border. Although the lodge is quite remote, there are several easy ways to get there. The lodge is located just one hour from Victoria Falls International Airport.
Flying into Livingstone Airport in Zambia is another option. It is the nearest airport to Tongabezi. Direct flights are available from Johannesburg or Cape Town if you’re flying from South Africa. Tongabezi, located at the Livingstone Airport is only 30 minutes away.
My stay at Tongabezi was a getaway for 3 best friends and I. Tongabezi Lodge consists of 6 private houses, 5 river cottages, and the Bird House with its open-air bath and private terrace. The Tree House is a luxurious honeymoon house. The Nut House has beautiful art and textiles from across Africa.
We stayed in the Garden House for 2 nights, and the Dog House for 1 night.
The Garden House and Dog House can both accommodate up to five people if you are traveling with a group. You will have a personal valet to ensure that you have a memorable stay in any accommodation. All cottages and houses are located on the river, except for the Garden House.
Although I was unable to visit them, the Tangala House (a private residence), and Sindabezi Island(a private island), offer unique experiences. They are on my list for next time!
Food & Drink
Three open-air dining areas at Tongabezi Lodge offer an unforgettable dining experience. We had dinner on a floating platform by the Zambezi River one night. Each course was delivered by canoe by our waiters!
A few of my closest friends gathered at a table beneath a vast expanse of stars to enjoy a few hours of charmed eating, drinking and laughing while the lanterns lit the dark of night.
Amazing local chefs use ingredients from the organic garden on-site, which is brimming over with fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Traditional Zambian cuisine is all seasonal and uses local ingredients.
Victoria Falls is the main attraction in the area. Tongabezi Lodge can arrange guided tours, or you can do your own. Victoria Falls was something I had always wanted to see, and I was able to make it happen!
We organised a visit to Tongabezi, and we saw the falls from both Zambia and Zimbabwe.
It was one of my most memorable experiences. I flew microlight over Victoria Falls. The falls look amazing from the ground but it’s better to see them from up high. Below, you’ll not only be able to see the falls but also countless wild animals! I saw elephants, crocodiles, and hippos.
This is one adventure you will definitely want to add on to your bucket list.
It is a good idea to spend at least one day at Victoria Falls. The Victoria Falls is open daily from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Entry costs from the Zambian side are $20 USD and $30 from the Zimbabwean side.
When entering any country, make sure you get a KAZA visa. It costs only $50 USD and permits entry to both Zimbabwean and Zambian.
All-inclusive accommodation at the Tongabezi lodge on the Zambezi River includes all meals. The Tongabezi Lodge offers a wide range of activities, including game drives, bush walks and boating trips.
There are many other activities that you can do in the area, which are also worth it.
Victoria Falls is more than just a place for selfies. White-water rafting is possible, as well as swimming in Devil’s Pool and canoeing. There are many adventure options available, including cruises, cultural tours, and canoeing.
